One of the best gifts you can ever give is that of hope, and visualizing is a part of hope for better things. Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0. Visualization takes practice. If you are skeptical, you may think that this is a waste of time.

Do not give into this temptation because everyone, skeptics included, can benefit from visualizing. Helpful 2 Not Helpful 0. While reading a book with no pictures, you should take some words and visualize them. This is amazing! I feel that this is going somewhere, no doubt in my mind. Definitely, my brain is doing something.

This is my new toy! I used a candle today. But I could see the surroundings, the sunny areas in my room in a negative way, no details. The iMac was on my right side and was most vizible, including some shapes on the screen my iMac was on, of course. Was funny because I was expecting to see the candle, not my iMac from the right side. I drawn a triangle on A4 paper using a black marker. This took me more time to see something but was the most important part for today. I could even see the paper at some point.

But interestingly: after closing my eyes, first seconds were dark. After seconds, the image appears. From time to time, color spots appeared: purple many times , yellow and pink once.

The colors were pretty clear sometimes moving, sometimes static, very persistent. Very strong feeling, not pleasant at all. Maybe because I was very focused all the time, paying attention. Not very clear but was unexpected. I went out to drive for 30 minutes around my city. Surprisingly, I could see half the triangle the area where I was focused on. Was unexpected to see something on first try because I just came from outside very bright.

I should also start exercise 2 solid colors. I will post again in a week. So good luck to everyone including me. One week later first 7 days of training : 1. I can see some of them with my eyes open, including recalling them back. I see people, objects — all random, nothing controllable. I can do this with or without guided meditation. This is happening on two places only: my room and my bathroom heh. Few years ago I started to meditate but never had these flashes in a deep relaxation so intention does play a huge role.

I must find a way to focus on visualizing in a conscious way. Looks like my brain is able to visualize. Week 2 My training was aggressive this week too.

I must admit, the routine is very, very annoying and time consuming. Candle on night — When the after-image is gone, a greenish spot remains again, vague. Is like a vague and blurry fog but is well observable especially on corners of my room. One night, I woke up to go to the bathroom. When I come back, before to jump in my bed to continue my sleep, a very vivid image apeared instantly.

I could swear is real. A lot of coloured bubbles rotating in cylindrical shape. I thought that I am hallucinating but… I have no idea how an hallucination looks like : 4. In a morning, when I woke up, a new image was very vivid: something like fingerprints lightning only with my eyes closed this time. My training remains the same: 1. I am trying to focus on keeping those flashes more than 2s.

No luck yet. So I quit using it and everything is back to normal. I had to try it! Is still blurry and I have no idea what exactly is. Is pretty much like a greenish fog. Are the only shapes distinguishable after a full month of training. I can resize them a little bit and I can rotate them. I tried to picture more complicated shapes but are too blurry and faded to distinguish them. I can picture only simple things looks like are the things I often use on daily training.

Yeah, I will keep the candle but I quit using simple geometric shapes drawn by my hand on paper. Thank you again Marko for this article. Kudos to you and your determined efforts! Thanks again for your website. Here is a brief description of my progress so far. I started with zero ability to visualize while awake e. I have always had dreams, often in color, but very rarely lucid dreams. I practice twice a day, once during the day and again in bed before going to sleep and if I wake in the middle of the night before going back to sleep.

My favorite form of image streaming is to lie in bed and stare at the texture in the ceiling, and describe what the patterns look like. Here are my results so far.

While practicing during the day, I have seen a few images, but again, only for a second or so. Wish me luck! Hello Marko, Thank you for your website.

I have a request for you. I would love to hear about people who went from zero visualization ability to being able to create and hold images in their mind. Thanks again. Thank you for leaving a comment here. I have a few concerns though. The afterimage is always in reversed and simplified colors somewhat like Negative in photography. The image seems actually visible, and not imaginable, as I always had before. This afterimage stays only for a few moments and then dissolves.

It appears smaller, like at a greater distance compared to the observable shape. Often times it shakes, flickers and transforms, it is frustrating difficult to keep it steady. Sometimes it even appears rotated 90 degrees. Is it normal? Alhough I never pay attention to the candle itself, only to the flame, in the after image I often see the solid outline of candle and only a tiny glowing yellow part of the flame, which is never the same size or shape as the actual flame.

I wonder if I do it right at all. That after-image may be very fickle and hard to keep, which is normal in the beginning. Perhaps throw in some variation. Try some real objects, something with a high contrast, like a spoon, a ballpen, etc.

Perhaps, now, attempt taking mental snapshots of things you see during your regular day. Say, for instance, a car you see on the street: look at it for a second or two, close your eyes also try with open eyes and try keeping the image. Thank you a lot for your support, I really apreciate it.

I will report back in a few weeks again. Yo I wanted to suggest working with an eye mask. One that lets in zero light. But yeah, going into a dark cave for a period of time was, like, a rite of passage in some cultures and it totally makes sense.

I want to thank you so much. Again thanks alot :. Hi marko and everyone here! My problem is much deeper than i thought. Wrong with me obviously, and few months ago i realised i have depression and only by thaat our brain ability to change neurogenesis memory senses imagination neuroplasticity , is weaker than in normal people soo it takes longer to develop brain. AND my problem was not only stress which damage hippocampus neurogenesis, neuroplasticity not only depession!

I have Hypothyroidism — hashimoto, so that means i have antibodies which are destroying my thyrosis. As a result of insuffficient hormones i have weaker cognitive functions and my brain cells and whole body need hormones to develop. And there can be even worse situation, in some hashimoto cases are antibodies directed into the brain too, and this causes brain degeneration.

And as can remember, i had this hashimoto my whole life, so i may think this is really the cause of my nondeveloping brain. Just started the visualization technique. Wish me luck. But I have question How many mins a day you have to practice? Its like only one technique is to be practiced in a day or we can do other mentioned ones too? How do I know that I an improving? Its like we see the exact colours and stuff after closing the eyelid the same we see through our eyes open?

Like I can visualise the image with my eyes open but its all black when I close the eyes. I always suggest to experiment with different exercises and see for yourself what works best for you. It has the same effect. To me, this experience was entirely profound. I have practiced it every day and seen little improvement. Now, thanks to this guide, I realize that there are different facets of visualization that need to be improved separately; this simple truth changes everything.

In retrospect, I feel that my practices up until now have been severely lacking. Thank you for pointing out this simple truth and for taking steps to help others develop this amazing ability! Thanks for these great exercises, Marko! I use guided visualization a lot since I find that it helps me the most compared to visualizing all by myself. Sorry if my comment was unclear or came off as spam, since It appears to have been deleted.

I would kindly like to know from anyone that this method worked on, to get them able to create mental images this question. Did part of the re-wiring process involve describing in detail what everything looked like to improve how vivid the image is? I have a question, did you have to build a visual library from scratch, or were you able to recall images you have seen in the past?

I was able to re- visit familiar scenes or recall familiar objects but these images were missing the small details. Thanks for responding, I plan to dedicate some time to each exercise and will be sure to report back if I have any progress. First, thank you for this write up. I thought I was alone in my struggle. I wonder if anyone else is experiencing severe distractions while trying to visualize… I try to picture myself a certain way, and within a few seconds I find myself thinking about something completely different.

I struggle with it and end up having to open my eyes to get control back of my own mind. I started the exercise with the candle today, but I had no succcess.

However, when I turned away this once and opened my eyes and stared at a white wall in my room, I felt like I saw a shadow resembling the flame of the candle, but with no colours. Any tips? That seems to be completely normal. Maybe it happens more often or more forcefully to those that struggle with visualising.

It might just be a learned association, in which case it could be reversed in time. Work on concentration. Try to think about nothing for as long as you can until something pops up then bring your attention back to nothing. Or focus on your your breathing and only that for as long as possible. When I was a child I tried to create images in my mind every night.

Because of that I stopped doing it. After reading the article I thought about my guitar, where the knobs are, the color, the length of the neck. The thing is that the volume knob was in cm lower than in reality. I knew were the knob should be, I could visualize how the know was moved like pulled off and mounted in the correct position , but then everything was deleted and I had the original image. This is what I mean by not controlling images as a child. One interesting thing is that after I got drunk years ago, I falled asleep when I got home and I had my first lucid dream.

I think the alcohol has nothing to do with it, but it made me laugh the secund day when I remembered that happened, anyways I could see, touch and hear. The funny thing is that I had more lucid dreams. In all of them I was in my room, and my room was so real. For semi-advanced practice, I like to lay down and listen to audio books and imagine as many details as possible.

Fantasy and science fiction stories work well because the author has to describe a lot of the scenes as they see them in their own minds. My images are still dark and blurry, but sometimes I can see full color and sometimes there are images that come up unsolicited.

Adding a track of isocronic tones or binaural beats helps too. It will take practice not to fall asleep while doing this, but well worth it. I have a question… Are you actually trying to see images behind your closed eye lids?? Or is it all mental imagination imagery? Like memory wise. I can remember a face.. A character on a tv show.. This is all without even closing my eyes. But is there really a way to see it behind closed eyelids?

Sorry if I sound confusing.. I just figured it was all in the mind. You can do this with closed eyes and with open eyes. Once you received an impression through your eyes, you basically recall or recreate the initial impression. Thought I was missing something and was suppose to see stuff behind closed eyelids like a projection screen haha. I am doing the same but I visualise better with my eyes open than closed eyes. Because if I close my eyes all I see is blackness and the focus shift to seeing through the eye instead of recalling image from the mind so is this normal?

Am I am doing correctly? And I look like a fool I guess visualising with open eyes in the day time. What to do in this type of situation? Visualise at night with open eyes after turning off the light? Whatever works best for you Rajan.

Watch Mike Cammalleri, Ice-Hockey pro, visualizing with open eyes here. Mine is extremely bad. Hi, i am with almost zero visualisation. And Yes, my memory and inteligence make me stupid. I am a photographer and the strange thing is I can recall photographs I have taken.

It is very strange. Also, I have incredibly vivid dreams that I can recall even from childhood. So I decided to read up on the topic and found this forum. Thank you for writing all of this up! Tonight I was able to see traffic driving on roads vaguely , it was amazing, the first image I had seen in my mind in years. What do you think? It has been great regaining some of my visualisation skills, now I have to find a way to control it better.

Another exercise, I did for quite some time, is to imagine toy blocks , turning them, stacking them on top of each other, and so on. Sad to say that my progress has stagnated, 1 because of my summer job and the lack of energy etc. THis I believe is the goal that we all want but with control of course.

What do I do now? And…it works! I will try this again but I do not know when and I will definitely be more cautious. Hello Marko, thank you for making this forum. I plan on trying out the techniques you listed for a couple of months, I have a question and would like to hear if you think this could help my visualization process.

I only mostly get impressions of extremely dim pictures that only lasts like 2 seconds, but I can still use these to do the problem solving technique I am able to do. So I was wondering would trying to visualize problems and solve them using visualization be worth using as a technique to practice or do you think it best to just stick with the known ones that work that you listed. He was known for having extraordinary visualization powers.

Observe these objects, their details and texture in real life and bring them into your routine. Gradually add more and more detail. Thank you very much Marko for your response! Hi, Marko! How do I join in and follow these threads? I am a total Aphantasiant and have never experienced my mind sensor of any sort. Can I follow you? Your advice is interesting. Thank you. Please let us know if make any progress with these or other exercises.

The more the better. Keep it light and easy. I did the exercises for a while and nothing. See my earlier comment below. I have yet to hear from anyone whose mental imagery turned on all of a sudden after doing exercises like this, other than Marko apparently. Just friendly note of warning before investing too much. I did it for 30 minutes a day for weeks.

All I got was afterimages. One practices to get better at something, for example, if your mental imagery is weak. Like I said, I have yet to hear from anyone whose mental imagery turned on all of a sudden from doing exercises like this. Do you think I should just give up? I have the other senses, they suck but I have them. Please make sure to get into a state of total relaxation before doing these exercises. Stop touching your eyes and begin describing what you see out loud. Try it foor at least a week, min a day.

Are the after images contained in a small rectangle in the center of your vision when you close your eyes for anybody else? Am on my second day of trying these excersizes the first day i could see absolutely nothing today i can see the shapes contained in a small rectangle in the centre of my closed eyes but very small sized. Took a longer than intended break. So, I got that for me in terms of progress. I am scared that i will never be better at it, even if i started witch seeing something :O.

I have attempted in the past to visualize via assignments in classes that require such I will commit to a few months of 5 or so minutes a day of the third exercise that appealed the most to me, and reply after that time if any progress is made. I am curious, has this worked for anyone so far besides Brandon and you? Now, i am not sure, i spend 1,5 month witch visualisation, first 1 hour per day, now, 30 min per day, and my visualisation skill is still weak, just little bit stronger than at start.

I think progress is a matter of persistence practise. I recommended longer sessions than 5 min, at least 10 min. Progress depends of person, for my stone brain it can take very long time, for you maybe not. Good luck ;. Sorry for English Thanks, You probably save my life, why you? I tell you after i get more progress, but for me very important is that this exercises to see any changes can take more than just 1 month, before when i stop train imagination after 1 month, i dont saw any progres and stop with thinking i will never done that.

Now after 1 month and 6 days i see little better pictures and when i hear song my mind alone visualise moments from music video, i did not have that before.

I will done comment here after several months and i will write why you save my life, thanks.. Oh my… i was too greedy here, after 1 month and 20 days i still have much moments when i almost have not visualisation skill, so annoying. I always was stupid, and EVEN i cant change that, where here is god? Sorry for English. Here i will report my progress.

After 2 months and 3 days i still have visualisation skill like at the begin. In this 6 days my visualisation was so weak again. My visualisation improving skill is so bad. OK, after 2 months 15 days, i added into main training relax. I tried to train visualization for like 1 month but without constancy. But now i want to start again. I will not stop, i want get better so so much, but its may be impossible. I will continue that maybe for 9 months, But i cant remind how powerful my visualisation was at the begin, maybe it slightly helped becouse i have not moments with near zero visualisation which i had at begin, but visualisation is still weak.

I am in the same boat as Sam H. I began my visualization regime 11 days ago, prompted by your sentence about how most self-help books already assume that you can visualize. Really frustrating.. On a scale of with 11 meaning conjuring HD images I have always been at 1. Always been able to dream now and then. It's quite the opposite; it's used by a whole array of people who know how to use it to bring about positive outcomes in their life.

Many athletes including Olympians use it to excel in their sports. The benefits of visualizing is also there for children; research from Beijing Institute of Physical Education and University of Ottawa found that child table tennis players between the ages of 7 to 10 performed better when they used visualizations mental imagery.

Interestingly, research has also found that people who imagine themselves performing a task, improve their performance in that task without physically doing anything. He discovered that people who did a virtual workout over three months in their minds were able to increase their muscle strength by In order to visualize and manifest the kind of life you want, it's very important to have a clear idea of what you want and why.

This can be achieved by understanding what you value and what brings you the most joy in life. Have you ever had that moment when you were doing something and felt joyful doing it? If yes, then that is a good sign of something you might want to have in your life.

This is one of the most important steps. When you want to manifest the life you want, you have to create a clear vision of what it should look like.
