The framework states that providers must put appropriate arrangements in place for the supervision of staff who have contact with children and families. For an employer, supervision supports the development of a motivated, confident workforce that reflects on the principles of safe practice and can mentor and support each other more effectively.
Appraisal, on the other hand, usually refers to a system of formal one-to-one meetings with staff to review performance and goals, set objectives and plan training needs for the future. It is an established part of modern staff management and is sometimes referred to as performance review.
While supervision is an ongoing process, with meetings sometimes held on a monthly or regular basis, appraisal usually consists of an annual meeting between a member of staff and their line manager. Sometimes they will have a six-monthly review to check on progress. Supervision and appraisal are closely linked, with many of the issues discussed during supervision also reviewed and reflected upon during appraisal.
However, both are distinct processes that serve different purposes and have different aims, supervision being more about developmental issues and concerned with skills development, and appraisal being more about performance and achieving objectives and goals. Both staff supervision and appraisal should be given a high profile and be fully supported by management in an early years service.
